Abandoned:

You just ran out on us.
You didn't say good-bye.
Not letting us know you left.
Not showing us you care.
We ask where you went.
We sit and wait for you.
Listening for the phone.
Listening for the doorbell.
Hoping you will come back.
Hoping you want to see us.
Oh why can't you love us?
Oh what a sad day this is.
Can't you see our tears?
Can't you hear us cry?
What have we done so bad?
What can we do to change?
Please come see us mommy.
Please come today.

There must be no worse feeling than getting ditched by your mother. I'm sure that's how the abandoned animals I've taken home felt too... Very sad!

That is so sad. My great grandfather walked away from his family - my mother is still bitter about it and never met him. It was the hearing of it that made her bitter.

I remember this poem well...and it my heart still hasn't recovered from the time I read it before...

Some things are just so hard to understand.
Many years ago I rescued two little ones from their angry/neglectful dad after their mom ran away. Those kids (now in their 30s ) still haven't forgiven their mother. She did come back some months later, but the dad had run away by then.

I guess the pain never leaves?

This poem is out of my realm of experience but the pain comes through.

Sometimes one see the in's and out's
Some forgive, some don't
Sometimes it's the one that stayed,
that should've left
Sometimes

This is heart rending, Ellis. The poem and that photograph.

And you got it right: the way it feels and the questions you ask.

Excuse my while I go cry ... Really!
