Hill 162:

Hill 162:

From the cannon's breach, you hear the mighty roar.
You see bodies of your men getting ripped and torn.
Screams of terror will fill the morning air,
as hidden snipers try to get their daily share.
Charging up 162 with your rifle and battle cry,
left and right you will see, most of your friends die.
Still you charge and soon will fight, someone hand to hand.
Your eyes will meet, just as he falls, upon blood soaked sand!
Making sure not one of them is left still alive,
you shoot everyone again, right where they lay.
You're pulling out, you don't have a lot of time,
hurry, get a count of the dead they left behind.
They tell you the job you did was really grand.
Don't worry, tomorrow you'll get to take 162 again!

Hill 162 sounds like a journey to Hell.

This is chilling. The line, "Your eyes will meet, just as he falls" - it must be awful to be in battle and realize the person you are fighting with is just another person like yourself.

The futility of war is so poignantly captured, Ellis, in those last three lines. Isn't that what our culture is doing, capturing Hill 162 over and over again?

Chilling.

War sucks. May we soon bring the boys all home forever.

You probably didn't intend for me to read it this way, Ellis, but I got a very dark, cynical, almost futile vibe from this. Kind of like war really.

Yes, this was a most excellent, instructive and poignant read, sir.

How intense!

Must be one of the worst moments that connection- but better than you being the one to fall.

I remember the news about those hills getting taken, lost, retaken, over n over in an endless cycle. Such a tough job for the solders. What a crazy war without reward that was!

Fantasric descriptive passage- tho a tough subject!

This truly captures the feel of battle, as it can only be captured by one who has lived it, I'm sure. I thank God I haven't had to have such an experience. I agree that war sucks, but I'm thankful for the brave men and women who protect us so we don't have to do it on our own! It's not a job I would be able to handle.

Talon:
True some went up the hill willingly
Others did only what they were told
And some were forced to go

Lynn:
Yes everyone that killed or was killed
had a story to be told. Even if we all know each
story someone would still kill or be killed.
Shame isn’t it

Meredith:
Yes at time the only reason to do battle is
To see what the other is willing to lose.

Jannie:
It’s a nice thought but it’ll never happen.

Jamie:
I try and do a breakdown of what I get out of what they wrote.
But Thanks
Talon is such a great writer.
I’d like to be good enough to someday carry her pens.

Tony:
Yes this is a part of war. You’re asking, did I like it? The high of that drug, of living on the edge between life and death, like all drugs Yes and No. Still unlike drugs, you’ll never get the taste out of your mouth or the dreams out of your head.

Snaggle:
Will be my thanks to you.

Mandy:
Let me see. Your right, yes thank God you didn’t, me too and yes if not for them (us) we would not be free.
